Locally hand crafted ceramic awards by Shanna Wheelock – easternmost potter in the USA – are presented to the top ultramarathon male and female runners, and the top three overall males and females in each of the other races. All ultramarathon finishers receive a hand made ceramic plaque and similar awards go to the top three males and females in each 10 year age group.
Some of our past marathon and half marathon finisher’s medals
All finishers get a medal. They are not dinner plate sized, nor do they incurr baggage surcharges if you are flying home afterwards. In the words of one runner, “they are more like jewellry”. Each year our local sculptor Richard Klyver of Eastport designs a unique new medal based on a local marine species. Each medal is hand cast in lead-free pewter, individually tooled, and hand strung on fishermen’s twine. 10K finishers receive a local cedar medallion (not pictured). Ultramarathon finishers receive a marathon finisher’s medal in addition to a ceramic ultramarathon plaque.
If you see Dick on the finish line – one of his focii is human and animal movement – you might tell him what you think of his work.
